The Alice Affect is a commentary on a contemporary interaction fueled by social media and its effects on our understanding of agency. The work is inspired by a phenomenon of placebo buttons and the psychological effect of the illusion of control it has on the viewer. Produced to provide users with the illusion of power the placebo buttons have apparent functionality but no physical effect when pressed. By contrast Illusion of control is a human tendency of overestimating the ability to direct. The performance strips the artist from the power to direct and lets the audience determine the outcome.
