Too Heavy to Carry-on

The piece tells a story through solidified symbols of personal identity collected through living in various places around the world. Heavy yet fragile, these representations of cultural identity and customs become artifacts that get carried around and get transformed into a metaphorical shrine upon the arrival of the new home. The transformation is hidden by nature, which acts as a bonding material — one constant among all the change.

The most important aspect of the transformation is hidden beneath the sand, uniting, bounding and yet concealing the overall structure. Questioning the form and the solidity of its nature, the body beneath the sand transforms over the lifetime. The pieces are perhaps too large and heavy, so it takes courage and strength to bring them along to the next place to call home.
